The Caucasian team scored a historic first point in its debut major tournament
Georgia managed to keep a draw in the second round match European Championship 2024 against Czech Republic – 1:1.
The match took place with a noticeable advantage of the Czech team. 14 shots, eight saves by Giorgi Mamardashvili – and at the same time the half remained with Willy Sagnol’s team. Georges Mikautadze converted a penalty for handball by Robin Granaz and became the first player since Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko to score both of his team’s first goals in the history of the European Championships.
The Czechs pulled back at the end of the hour thanks to a corner kick. Ondrej Lingr’s shot hit the post, and Patrik Schick hit the ball into the net from a meter away, scoring his sixth goal in seven matches at the European Championships.
The Czech Republic tried to snatch victory, and had a chance to do so. But the heroic Mamardashvili, as well as inaccuracy in finishing, did not allow the Slavic team to achieve what they wanted. Moreover: in the last seconds, Georgia ran into a counterattack (three against one), but Saba Lobzhanidze, who replaced the injured Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, shot centimeters over the crossbar.
Both teams scored their first points in the tournament, and for Georgia this score was the first in history. In the third round on June 26, the Czech Republic will play with Turkey, and Georgia will play with Portugal.
