The Ukrainians dramatically lost to their rivals from France in the final
Ukrainian women’s saber fencing team became a silver medalist European Championship 2024which takes place in Basel, Switzerland.
The national team achieved a successful result with the following composition: Olga Kharlan, Alina Komashchuk, Elena Kravatskaya and Yulia Bakastova.
In the quarter finals, the Ukrainians defeated the Bulgarian team (45:42), and in the semifinals they were stronger than their rivals from Hungary (a strong-willed victory 45:41).
The final confrontation with the French team was as dramatic as possible. The opponents led 25:22 after five rounds, then Komashchuk’s powerful performance put her team ahead. Before the last round the score was 40:39 in favor of Ukraine. Kharlan led 44:42, but did not put the pressure on her opponent – and in the end the French women celebrated a strong-willed victory 45:44.
This medal was the first for Ukrainian saber fencers in team competitions at the European Championships since 2018.
