In July, the Zhytomyr team will start in the Conference League
Head coach Polesia Imad Ashur spoke about the tasks of the Zhytomyr team for the 2024/25 season, as well as plans for the pre-season training camp before their debut in European competition.
“In one of our previous public speeches, our management already voiced their wishes regarding the next step: the fight for the top three in the championship. As for the European Cups, I would like to win every game, move and improve from match to match. This increases the chances of getting to the position we want. And we want the maximum position.”
“We are now preparing not for the everyday context, but for the fact that in the future we want to compete with top-level teams. We want the maximum and I believe that if we can find the approach and what the principles of the game that we talk about are aimed at, then we can at least internally understand that the probability of success will increase.”
“The vast majority of our training camp will take place at our base. As for the number of matches, we decide on it. But it won’t be crazy great. We will play about 5-6 matches. For now, we need to learn how to implement our ideas in the game. We need to understand them and practice them in a more controlled environment. And it can only be created in the training process. Of course, this will give us confidence in our abilities. There is a possibility that part of the preparatory process closer to the first game in the Conference League could take place abroad. But this will be a short part.”
Polesie will play against Slovenian Olimpia in the second round of the Conference League qualification. The reporting round matches will take place on July 25 and August 1. The first meeting will take place in Ljubljana, the return match will be at Polesie’s “home” arena in Gliwice, Poland. Another Ukrainian club, Dnepr-1, will play with the Hungarian Puskas Academy at this stage.
