Head coach of the Italian national team Luciano Spalletti explained how he plans to work with the team in the future.
The Italian national team under the leadership of Spalletti lost to the Swiss team on Saturday with a score of 0:2 in the 1/8 finals of the European Championship and was eliminated from the tournament. After the match, the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, announced that Spalletti would remain in charge of the national team.
“I thank the fans for their love and support, the players for their preparation and professionalism, for achieving everything I asked of them. I am sorry that I cannot match their skill level.
There is no going back. Not everything worked out for me, I tried to inspire the team and I will try to do it even better in the future.
I was told that I increased the intensity of training too much, that I told stories to motivate the players, but that’s my life. Models are always needed, otherwise there is no way forward.
“Yesterday’s game brought us back to zero again, and we will start from scratch. I will update the team and try to create a team. I was not given the answers I was looking for in terms of leadership. In the future we will be younger, with new energy and strength,” Spalletti said according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Spalletti, 65, was named Italy coach in August 2023.
The specialist led Zenit St. Petersburg from 2009 to 2014. Under the Italian’s leadership, the club won the Russian Championship twice and the National Cup once.
