Football Spain is not ready for any surprises: it beats Georgia and reaches the quarter-finals of the Euro with a perfect stride

The Iberian team repelled Luis de la Fuente’s attempts and qualified for the round of 16 with a clear 4-1. They now face Germany, the venue for the continental competition.

More than one supporter was surprised when Robin Le Normand botched the clearance and sent the ball into his own goal. 18 minutes have passed and Georgia have taken the lead in Cologne against Spain. The Iberians handled the ball, but they found themselves behind on the scoreboard. Willy Sagnol’s team dealt a heavy blow that sought to equal (and surpass) the defeat against Portugal that allowed them to qualify for the round of 16. But they couldn’t.

This Spain positions itself as the team with the best moment in the European Cup. Even if they do not have the figures of England, for example, the Red Fury present a defined functioning, based on scale and verticality. And effective too. They thus came back against Georgia to reach the quarter-finals of the competition. The wins add to the good play. They only won and scored one goal. On this occasion, they won 4-1, with scores from Rodri, Fabián Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo. They came back against a group that had struck from the start, but could not maintain the pace imposed by the one led by Luis de la Fuente.

The Hispanics’ goals came at the right time. As the Georgian block retreated into their own ground, Rodri opened the defence with a shot from the edge of the area in the 39th minute. The Manchester City midfielder controlled the ball with his right and fired it with his left foot, a very corner-like shot that Giorgi Mamardashvili, the very good goalkeeper of the nation located on the Black Sea, could not contain. With that, they opened up a responding defense. With that, they also indicated that they were not ready to do strange things that day. His teammate Pedri celebrated with euphoria. It was the sign they needed.

The procedure was entirely for Spain. From the start of the second half, Mamardashvili responded with a slap from Lamile Yamal’s free kick. However, the ball remained in possession of the red team, a progression from left to right left the ball again in the hands of the 16-year-old footballer, who launched a perfect cross for Fabián Ruiz. The midfielder burst into the box and gave his team the lead with a precise header in the 51st minute. The goalkeeper managed to hit him, but the head was so high that he couldn’t deflect it. And even the fact of not being at the top made the Spaniards take their foot off the accelerator.

Yamal forced an own goal but it was ruled out for offside. The Barcelona winger, left-handed but acting on the right side, wreaked havoc. Placed shots that hit the post were the trend. Maybe he missed his goal. Those who scored were Nico Williams and Dani Olmo. Both display their qualities. The Athletic Bilbao leader commanded a very quick counter-attack and scored with a powerful shot towards the inside of the roof of the goal.

The Leipzig player, who came on in the second half, put the finishing touch with a left-footed shot, facing goal, which left Mamardashvili like a statue. With the victory complete, Spain joins England, Switzerland and Germany as qualifiers for the quarter-finals. In the round of the eight best, they will face the Germans in a sort of “early final”, since they were the best in the competition.
