Diogo Costa becomes first goalkeeper to save three penalties in European Championship shootouts

The Portuguese is also the first player in the history of the Euro who did not concede a goal for the entire match, including the penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper Portugal national team Diogo Costa became the first goalkeeper to save three penalties in a penalty shootout European Championships.

In the Euro 2024 Round of 16 match against Slovenia, Costa saved shots from Josip Ilic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic. The goalkeeper’s performance allowed the Portuguese to win the penalty shootout after just three shots.

Costa also became the first goalkeeper in the history of the Euro who did not concede a goal during the entire match, which lasted 120 minutes plus a penalty shootout. It should be noted that in overtime, Diogo also saved the Portuguese team, blocking a shot after Benjamin Sesko went one-on-one.

In the quarter-finals, Portugal will play France, which beat Belgium by a minimum score (1:0). The match will take place on July 5 in Hamburg, starting at 22:00.
