The 41-year-old Portuguese continues to break records
Central defender Portugal national team Pepe became the oldest footballer to play in the playoffs of a major tournament (World Cup or European Championship).
Pepe entered the field in the 1/8 final match of the 2024 European Championship against Slovenia (0:0, 3:0 on penalties) at the age of 41 years and 126 days.
Interestingly, Pepe surpassed the achievement of England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who played at the age of 40 years and 292 days in the third-place match at the 1990 World Cup against Italy.
Earlier, the Portuguese became the oldest player to take to the field in the history of the European Championships.
In the quarter-finals, Portugal will play France, which beat Belgium by a minimum score (1:0). The match will take place on July 5 in Hamburg, starting at 22:00.
At 41 years and 126 days old, Pepe is the oldest man to appear in a World Cup or European Championship knockout game, breaking Peter Shilton’s record.
