Tom is a product of the club’s youth system and returned there in 2021, but has only played in goal for the Red Devils three times in all that time.
Manchester United extended the contract with the veteran and club legend, the reserve goalkeeper, for another year by Tom Heaton.
Tom, 38, is a Red Devils youth product who has been waiting a long time for his chance to make his debut for the first team. From 2005 to 2010, he was regularly on loan at Swindon, Antwerp, Cardiff, Queens Park Rangers, Rochdale and Wycombe.
Finally, he left as a free agent for the already familiar Cardiff, from there to Bristol, from there to Burnley, where he stayed for as long as six years (200 matches, 65 – “clean”). The Clarets sold the goalkeeper to Aston Villa for as much as 8.8 million euros, from where the “prodigal son” returned to Manchester United in 2021.
Only then was the experienced goalkeeper able to make his debut for his home club – against Young Boys (1:1) in the Champions League group. In the 2022/23 season, Heaton played two matches in the team’s victory in the League Cup, not conceding in either of them. Tom has not played a single minute for Manchester United in the Premier League yet.
Manchester United finished eighth in the league. The Red Devils then finished the 2023/24 season with a 2-1 FA Cup win over Manchester City, qualifying for the Europa League.
