Turkish footballer shows ultra-nationalist salute
UEFA launched an investigation into the national team defender Turkey Merih Demiral after the match of the 1/8 finals of Euro 2024 against the team Austria (2:1).
The footballer is accused of improper conduct after he celebrated his second goal of the match by making a hand gesture associated with the ultra-nationalist organisation Ulku Ocaklari, better known as the Grey Wolves.
UEFA confirmed that it had appointed a special inspector to investigate Demiral’s case. It is not yet known when the investigation will be completed.
The Turkish national team became the last participant in the 1/4 finals of Euro 2024, having won against Austria by a minimal score of 2:1. In doing so, Demiral scored the fastest goal in the history of the playoff matches of the final tournaments of the European Championships. In addition, Merih was recognized as the best player of the match.
On July 6, Turkey will play the Netherlands in the semi-finals of Euro 2024. The match will take place in Berlin and will begin at 22:00 Kyiv time.
