The semi-automatic system for determining offside in the game will start operating from the 2022/23 season.

UEFA will be ahead of FIFA in the revolutionary introduction of a semi-automatic offside detection system. According to the official website of the Union of European Football Associations, the innovation will be applied to the UEFA Super Cup 2022 match. After that, the system will work in the Champions League group stage this season.

“UEFA is constantly looking for new technological solutions to improve the quality of the game and assist the referees. The semi-automatic offside detection system is an innovative technology that will allow the VAR teams to identify offside positions faster and more accurate, which helps maintain the rhythm of the game and the consistency of the decisions made.

The system is ready for use in official matches and for use in every Champions League stadium,” said Roberto Rosetti, head of the UEFA Refereeing Committee.

We will remind, FIFA previously reported that it plans to use a semi-automatic offside detection system in World Cup matches in Qatar. The new system will work thanks to special cameras capable of tracking 29 points on the body of each player. A total of 188 tests have been conducted since 2020.

The 2022 UEFA Super Cup match will take place on August 10 in Helsinki. It will face Champions League winner, Spanish Real and Europa League trophy winner, German Eintracht. The match will start at 22:00 Kyiv time.
