Initially, the agency had indicted the businessman for not collaborating and for not presenting the requested material.
The trial of John Textor was temporarily suspended by the defense, preventing its holding, which was scheduled for this Wednesday at the STJD headquarters, in Rio de Janeiro. The case involves the possession of audios in which the owner of the SAF Botafogo claims to have recorded “judges complaining about not receiving bribes”initially reported for lack of presentation of evidence.
Initially, the STJD had indicted the businessman for not cooperating and for not presenting the requested material. However, Textor submitted the audios in May, following a court order. The new trial was scheduled for today, but the defense argued that the conclusion of the investigations was rushed, violating the right to a full defense. The Court agreed with the defense’s request, postponing the trial until after August 15, when Textor will have a meeting with the CBMA (Brazilian Center for Mediation and Arbitration).
According to the STJD document, “it would be reckless to definitively convict the applicant for failure to present evidence before 15/08/2024, the date on which the ongoing procedure at the CBMA could provide support for an adequate trial, either to increase the sentence imposed or to acquit him.”

The suspension is seen as a victory for Textor’s defense, which gained time to structure its strategy. The meeting with the CBMA is seen as an opportunity for a new trial under more balanced conditions. Textor reiterated that he did not feel obligated to share additional evidence with the STJD, since it is already in the possession of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
It is important to note that this case is not related to Textor’s statements accusing the Palm trees of alleged benefits in the last Brazilian championships. Recently, there was an incident involving the case’s auditor, Mauro Marcelowho inadvertently leaked the names of the players mentioned when asking for a six-year suspension for the agent. The date for the trial of this incident has not yet been set.
