The U23 team helps young Italians grow.. It’s a leitmotif we’ve heard from the pros in recent years, a litany that Italy have emerged stronger since their exit from the European Championship, even if our game’s second-oldest team is now down to a handful of quality players, of whom only a couple of those who made it into the first team – Fabio Miretti and Nicolo Fagioli – are eligible for the national team, while the rest, from Heysen to Ealing Junior, via Sule and Barrenxea to Yildiz, have other passports and will probably make a fortune as national rivals. Not exactly a great help to the blue movement (as opposed to the corporate coffers), but so be it.
