“CONMEBOL strongly condemns any act of violence. All our work is based on the belief that football connects and unites through its positive values. There is no place for intolerance and violence in football, whether on or off the pitch,” the organization said in a statement.
After the match, Uruguayan national team players Darwin Nunez and Ronald Araujo went up to the podium and started fighting with fans wearing Colombian national team jerseys. Later, Uruguayan captain José María Jiménez said that his teammates went up to the stands to protect their families from the Colombians’ deviant behavior. The police had to break up the fight.
