Mbappe family in talks to buy Ligue 2 club Caen

The family business of the famous striker could gain a status asset

The family of the famous forward Kylian Mbappe is in talks to acquire a football club Kan (Stade Malherbe Caen), playing in the French League 2.

The club is currently owned by American company Oaktree Capital Management, which became the owner of Inter Milan in May this year. Oaktree recently notified minority shareholder Caen Pierre-Antoine Kapton of its intention to withdraw from the ownership group. Therefore, the club quickly had to find new investors.

Kylian Mbappe’s family, led by Kylian’s mother (and his brother Ethan, who recently joined Lille) Fayza Lamari, is keen to expand its operations. In addition to managing the careers of both brothers, she also controls the IBKM charity foundation and a football agency. Talks for the family to acquire a majority stake in Caen are reportedly at an advanced stage.

The football club from Normandy has been in existence since 1913. Caen has spent a total of 18 seasons in the French top division, with its best result being fifth place in 1992. The team last played in Ligue 1 in the 2018/19 season.

In the 2023/24 season, the Vikings finished sixth in Ligue 2, just one point outside the play-off zone.
