Former Dynamo Moscow goalkeeper Anton Shunin spoke about the situation of the non-renewed contract with the “blue and white”.
In early July, Dynamo announced that Shunin, 37, had left the team due to the expiration of his contract. He spent 17 seasons with the Blue and White.
— How did you find out that the contract would not be renewed?
— In December, at the end of the first half of the season, the head coach and the goalkeeper coach spoke to me. They said that they saw me in the team and would contact the management to extend my contract. The management also spoke about this several times, including in the media. I remember our conversation that I could break Novikov’s record for the number of matches for Dynamo. I then said that my contract was ending, I had no more time. To which Pavel Konstantinovich (Pivovarov, general director of Dynamo – approx. ) replied: “Well, then we will sign again.” But no specific proposals were made, as some media reported. After the winter holidays, the situation changed. There was less talk about an extension, but the management continued to claim in the media that everything would be fine. I had no reason not to believe them.
Towards the end of the season, I myself raised this topic, but they answered me: “Let’s wait a little, now we are fighting for the championship.” As a result, we met with Pivovarov and Gafin to discuss the contract only on the first day of the training camp. They told me that the contract would not be renewed, but they offered me to stay in the club structure if I wanted. And they said that I could express my wishes, which I did,” Shunin said, as quoted by Championship.
