Murat Yakin to continue leading Switzerland national team

Giorgio Contini will also remain in the team

Swiss Football Association announced the extension of the contract with the coach of the main team of the country Murat Yakin.

Yakin’s assistant Giorgio Contini will also remain on the team. Official details of the agreement will be presented on Monday, July 15.

Yakin spent most of his coaching career in Switzerland, also coaching Basel, Sion, Thun, Lucerne and Grasshopper. Abroad, he only headed Spartak Moscow. In August 2021, Yakin took over the Swiss national team, replacing Vladimir Petkovic.

The coach made it to the 2022 World Cup round of 16 playoffs, losing to Portugal. Switzerland then retained their place in Division A of the Nations League.

At Euro 2024, Switzerland reached the quarter-finals, losing to England on penalties. However, of their last 19 matches, the Swiss have lost only one – to Romania in the European Championship qualifiers.
