Gnistan Football Club reported that there was a fire in the main stand of the local stadium and that the Helsinki team will therefore not be able to play the remaining Finnish league matches at the arena.
Mustapekka Arena stadium was built in 1934; due to the team’s promotion to the first division, the capacity of the stands was increased to 2.2 thousand people. Gnistan reported that no one was injured as a result of the fire.
— At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown, but authorities are investigating. We deeply regret this incident and want to assure everyone that we will do everything possible to investigate the situation and repair the damage. We would like to thank the firefighters for their prompt and professional response.
The Finnish Championship match against Mariehamn has been cancelled. The arena will not be able to host matches until the end of the season. This means that the men’s and women’s matches will be moved to other venues. We are currently exploring alternative options. The pitch at Mustapekka Arena is damaged and it is not yet known in what format it will be possible to resume training there, said a statement from the club, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024.
Gnistan is in ninth place in the Finnish Championship standings.
