Uruguay beat Canada on penalties in third place match at Copa America 2024

Marcelo Bielsa’s team won bronze medals at the tournament

On Copa America 2024 the match for third place took place – Uruguay outplayed in the penalty shootout Canada.

The score was opened in the 8th minute – after a pass from Sebastian Caceres, Rodrigo Bentancur scored with an accurate strike. The Canadians equalized the score in the middle of the first half – Marseille newcomer Ismael Kone was the first to find his bearings in the penalty area and beautifully sent the ball into the net of Sergio Rochet.

Canada took the lead in the 80th minute through Jonathan David, who along with several other key players from Jesse Marsh’s team was not in the starting lineup. Uruguay equalized in stoppage time in the second half, with Luis Suarez finishing off a through ball from Jose Maria Jimenez for his first goal of the tournament.

To determine the winner, a penalty shootout had to be used. Uruguay converted all their shots masterfully, while Canada’s Ismael Kone (we note the save by Sergio Rocheta) and Alphonso Davies, who tried to perform a panenka, hit the crossbar, failed to score.

Uruguay won the bronze medals of the 2024 Copa America, but the final match will take place on the night of July 14-15 between Argentina and Colombia. The starting whistle will sound at 03:00 Kyiv time.
