“Mr Southgate, although victory may have eluded you tonight, my wife, I and the whole family urge you and your players to hold your heads high.
Anyone who has participated in a sporting event, at any level, knows how frustrating it can be to lose when victory is so close. That is why they will join in my sincere condolences, even as we all congratulate Spain.
Know that your success in reaching the final of the European Football Championship is truly a great achievement. It already carries within it the pride of the nation, which will continue to worry today about the “three lions” and in many triumphs that, I have no doubt, await us all, “the royal press service quotes Charles III as saying the families.
England have never become European champions to date. The best achievement of the British has been reaching the final. They have achieved this twice, both times in the last three years. In 2021, Gareth Southgate’s team lost to Italy in the final on penalties, and this time they were unable to face Spain.
