Ukraine will play against Austria in autumn
Newly minted captain of the Ukrainian women’s tennis team Ilya Marchenko commented on his appointment to the post. According to him, Ukraine is capable of defeating the strongest teams in the world.
“When I was offered to lead the women’s team, I did not hesitate for a minute, although it was unexpected. It is a huge honor and responsibility, so I am very grateful for this opportunity. Now the national team is in first place for me. I understand my strengths in this role very well and I know how I can help our team.”
“I thank the Svitolina Foundation for their trust. I believe that we can and must fight and defeat the strongest teams in the world. In particular, with our presence and achievements in the international sports arena, we must remind people that the war continues and people die every day in Ukraine.”
The 36-year-old tennis player will combine his playing career with the position of captain. Marchenko replaced Mikhail Filima in the post.
Let us recall that our team did not make it to the final stage of the Billie Jean King Cup. The Ukrainian team lost to Romania in the qualification – 2:3, having lost the advantage of two winning games.
Ukraine failed to reach the final stage of the Billie Jean King Cup for the third year in a row. In 2022, our tennis players lost to the US team, and in 2023, to the Czech national team.
The blue-yellows were among the seeded teams before the playoffs. In the fall (15-16 or 16-17 November) Ukraine will play against the Austrian team.
