Fernando Alonso revealed one of the reasons that made him abandon Formula 1 in 2018 and spend two seasons away from the category
Fernando Alonso will turn 43 this July and, despite having debuted in Formula 1 in 2001, the Spaniard did not spend the entire period competing in the category. In 2018, the driver left the highest shelf of motorsport, which seemed like a farewell, but he returned to compete in 2021, when he signed with Alpine.
In an interview with the ‘Financial Times’, an English newspaper, the veteran revealed the reason for his departure from Formula 1. According to Alonso, the large advantage that Mercedes had been getting in those years demotivated him, made the sport predictable and distanced him from the sport. Between 2014 and 2020, only the German team was champion.
“When I left F1 in 2018, I felt the sport was too predictable, Mercedes’ dominance was too much for me to enjoy being in the sport. We were like actors in a Mercedes movie, we couldn’t fight at any point”revealed the Spanish pilot.
In 2021, Alonso returned to the category to defend the Alpine and, in his first year with the new team, he returned to the podium after seven years. The veteran then signed with Aston Martinwhere he achieved good results and once again stood out in Formula 1. Regarding this current phase, the Spaniard highlighted the importance of having a competitive car.
“When I have the right equipment, I can still achieve good things. They (other drivers) should always take me into consideration, even if the car is not in the best condition. I will always be a warrior. I have not changed my approach.”he stated.
