Captain of Argentina Lionel Messi suffered a serious injury in the 2024 Copa America final, team head coach Lionel Scaloni said.
Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America final on Sunday. Messi left the field in the 66th minute with a right ankle injury. Video footage later showed the forward sitting on the bench with a badly swollen ankle.
“I didn’t say anything (about the injury) after all the celebrations. I know Messi had trouble walking. You’ve already seen the images. The sprain is serious,” TyC Sports quotes Scaloni as saying.
Messi, 37, has won the Copa America twice as part of the Argentina national team and previously became world champion in 2022.
