Ukraine beat Croatia in key match
Head coach Women’s national football team of Ukraine Vladimir Pyatenko commented on the team’s victory over Croatia (2:0) in the 6th round of the selection for European Championship 2025.
“Positive emotions – both from the training camp and from the games. The girls are great – to play two games in such heat, to do such a volume of work. Yes, there are certain [нюансы]but I think everything was an A.” We knew how the Croatians play. The girls were better than their opponents in all areas: more aggressive, faster, more technical.”
“I would like to highlight the pressing and the final stage of the attacks. Ekaterina Korsun joined the attack and was in the right place. We told them not to let Croatia get out of defense – and they did it, although it was difficult. The girls did everything we planned in training.”
“Somewhere a bit with the Croatians on the road [не получилось]but it happens. There was an advantage, we didn’t use it. But after that — very good. In the first stage of the playoffs we will be seeded — this is the merit of the girls, the whole team, the staff and the management.”
“The girls come to the national team and leave all their problems behind. We have just gathered after our vacation. The girls playing in Turkey will only start the championship in August. The Kolos and Vorskla football players will have the Champions League qualification. By October, we will all be in the game rhythm – that is also confidence.”
The Ukrainian team scored 11 points – in the tournament table of their quartet, the blue-yellows are in second place. The winner of the group was Wales, which has 14 points. The third position belongs to Croatia, with 9 points.
Ukraine was one of the two best second-placed teams and will be seeded in the first round of the qualifying playoffs.
According to the regulations, the teams that finish first in the four groups of League B and the two best teams that finish second in League B will play against the remaining two teams that finish second and the four teams that finish third in League B. The six teams that overcome this playoff barrier will play in the final stage of the selection against opponents that will advance through Path A and Path C.
The top seven will eventually qualify for the 2025 European Championship. Two playoff rounds will take place in October–December 2024.
