Luka will stay at Real for at least one season
Midfielder Real Madrid Luka Modric signed a new one-year contract with the club. The Croatian also received the captain’s armband after Nacho left for the Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadisiya.
Real had been actively working on extending the contract with the midfielder since May. Blancos head coach Carlo Ancelotti was interested in keeping the Croatian.
In February, Ancelotti offered the player to join the coaching staff of Blancos at the end of the season. However, Luka made a final decision to refuse, as his priority remains the continuation of his playing career.
The Italian coach later stated that Modric’s future is in his hands, and the quality of the minutes he spends on the field is more important than their quantity.
Modric joined Real Madrid in August 2012 from Tottenham for 35 million euros. With the Whites, Luka won the Champions League six times, the Spanish Championship four times and the Club World Cup four times. While playing for Real, Modric was named European and World Footballer of the Year.
Last season, Modric played 46 matches for Los Blancos in all competitions, scoring two goals and making eight assists. In total, the Croatian has 534 matches for Real, 39 goals and 86 assists.
Real Madrid became the champion of Spain and the winner of the Champions League at the end of the season. In the first round of the new Primera, the team of Ukrainian Andriy Lunin will play Mallorca.
