Argentina fires manager who asked Messi to apologize to French people for offensive chant

Argentine President Javier Miley has fired the deputy head of the sports department, Julio Garro, who had called Lionel Messi Apologies to French footballers for offensive chant.

During the celebration of the victory of the Copa America 2024, in which Argentina beat Colombia (1:0), the Argentine players sang a racist chant against the players of the French team. The video was broadcast live on social networks by the player of the Argentine national team Enzo Fernández and the episode was filmed.

— The president’s office says that no government can tell the Argentine world champion and two-time America’s Cup winner what to say, think or do, or any other citizen in the country. For this reason, Julio Garro is no longer deputy secretary of sports, the Argentine president’s press office reported on social media.

The International Football Federation (FIFA) has opened an investigation following a complaint filed by the French Football Federation regarding the behavior of players on the Argentina national team.
