Como announces signing of 41-year-old Pepe Reina

The highly experienced goalkeeper will continue to play at the top league level

Serie A Newcomer Como announced the signing of a contract with the former goalkeeper Villarreal Pepe Reina.

Pepe Reina will turn 42 on August 31. His contract with Como runs until June 30, 2025.

Following last season, Reina completed his employment contract with Villarreal and became a free agent.

In the second half of the 2022/23 season, Pepe was the Yellow Submarine’s main goalkeeper. Last summer, the club extended the veteran’s contract for another year. However, in the 2023/24 season, Reina played little – mainly in the Europa League. In total, the Spaniard played 12 matches, only three of them “with a clean sheet”.

Reina has experience of playing in Serie A with Napoli, Milan and Lazio. His career also included Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern and Aston Villa.

Pepe played 36 matches for the Spanish national team (2005-2018), with which he participated in four World Cups (including the victorious 2010) and two European Championships (both won by La Furia Roja). Pepe will turn 42 in August.

Como entered Serie A following the Italian second division championship. Larijani will play in the elite for the first time since the 2002/03 season.

The team will be led by Cesc Fabregas in the new season, who, along with Thierry Henry, is on the list of shareholders of the club. Experienced forward Andrea Belotti has signed a full contract with Como, and defender Raphael Varane was supposed to arrive for negotiations with the club. Two more potential transfers for Larijani are Marseille goalkeeper Pau Lopez and former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.
