Athletistic / Football. Former German national team midfielder Toni Kroos has recalled the scandalous incident of the ball hitting Spanish defender Marc Cucurella in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. The match’s main referee, Englishman Anthony Taylor, did not award a penalty following the incident.

“Until today, I was holding back on this episode, and in the last podcast we even said we wouldn’t talk about it. But I got angry when I saw that moment again.

Now, I have to say that during the match I couldn’t see that moment from the right angle. I had no way of seeing that it was pure handball. I looked at the referee. The referee felt that he didn’t need to review the episode and the VAR assistant confirmed his decision.

“I think the referee should have at least watched the episode. I think the problem is that he knew that if he watched, he would have to give a penalty. He felt that he didn’t want that to happen in a game like this,” Cross said on the Einfach mal luppen podcast.

The match between the national teams of Spain and Germany in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 ended with the victory of the “Red Fury” in extra time with a score of 2:1. As a result, the Spaniards became European champions by beating England in the final (2:1), and Toni Kroos, after losing in the quarter-finals, officially ended his football career.
