FIFA postpones decision to ban Israel from international football

The International Football Federation (FIFA) has postponed its decision on Palestine’s request to ban Israel from international football, FIFA reported on its website.

The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) submitted a proposal to suspend Israel in May, and FIFA ordered an urgent legal review, promising to consider the issue at an extraordinary meeting of its board in July.

— An independent legal assessment of the Palestinian Football Association’s proposals against the Israeli Football Association was to be submitted to the FIFA Council by 20 July 2024.

Once both parties have requested an extension of the deadline to present their respective positions, which was granted in due time by FIFA, further time will be required to complete the matter carefully and thoroughly. The assessment will be submitted to the FIFA Council for a further decision no later than 31 August 2024, the statement said.

Thus, the Israeli national football team will be able to participate in the Paris Olympics, which will begin on July 26. The match for the men’s Olympic gold will take place on August 9.

Earlier, an independent group of lawyers specializing in international law and human rights had called on FIFA to ban Israel from all football-related activities because it had violated FIFA statutes during the fighting in Gaza.
