Edward Iordanescu to step down as Romania national team head coach

The Romanian Football Federation and the specialist decided not to renew the contract, which expires at the end of July

Romanian Football Federation officially announced the end of cooperation with the head coach of the national team by Edward Iordanescu.

The parties did not extend the contract, which expires at the end of July. The coach reportedly decided to take a break himself, and the Federation treated this decision with “understanding and respect.”

Edward is the son of Anghel Iordanescu, a famous coach in the recent past, who led the Romanian national team to two World Cups (1994 – quarterfinals, 1998) and two European Championships (1996, 2016). The 46-year-old specialist has managed to coach a number of Romanian clubs during his career (including Vaslui, Pandurii, Astra, CFR CFR, Gaz Metan and FCSB), as well as Bulgarian CSKA.

Iordanescu Jr. took the helm of the national team at the beginning of 2022. Under his leadership, the Tricolor won 10 times and drew the same number of times in 28 matches, conducted a very successful qualification for Euro 2024 (first place, only 5 goals conceded in 10 matches), and started the European Championship itself with a sensational big victory over Ukraine (3:0), which ultimately allowed the Romanians to qualify for the playoffs.
