Ukraine U-19 team leaves tournament at semi-final stage
The president Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) Andriy Shevchenko commented on the team’s performance Ukraine on Youth Euro 2024.
“The boys had a very good tournament. They accomplished all the tasks set before them, got out of the group and got to the World Cup. They played a very good match and won an important victory over Italy.”
“The guys played on equal terms with France. It was a very difficult match. The French are a strong team, but we had chances and lost by a minimal amount. If I evaluate the entire tournament, then my assessment is positive. This applies to both the coach and the entire team. They will prepare for the World Cup. They have very strong motivation, a good team, and they represented Ukraine with dignity.”
“We saw how emotionally the guys took the defeat in the semi-final. But that’s normal for the start of a career. You have to get over it. I like that they have a team. I saw even in the game with France that they are all for each other. Even when it was tough, when the opponents controlled the game, they were united and supported each other.”
“I congratulated the team, wished them to get together in a year, prepare well and play at the World Cup. Go for their goals. I think that each of these guys has a chance to prove themselves in adult football. Clubs should pay attention to them. We must support our youth. They have great potential.”
The fate of yesterday’s semi-final match of the 2024 European Youth Championship between Ukraine and France (0:1) was decided by the only accurate strike by Valentin Atangana in the 61st minute of the match.
The French national team will play Spain in the final of the European Youth Championship. The match will take place on Sunday, July 28.
