Svitolina: In the second set I told myself that I needed to fight and give it my all

Ukrainian woman continues march in Paris

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina commented on the victory over the world’s sixth racket Jessica Pegula from the United States in the second round of the singles tennis tournament Olympics 2024.

“The first set was quite difficult. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take advantage of my chances, although I had them. But in the second set, I just said that I need to fight, I need to give it my all to get back into the match. I’m very happy that I got back into the match and played the second and third sets at a very high level.”

“When you play against a top-level tennis player, you always have to change the pace, play more aggressively. When I lost the first set, I was not far from my game, but I had to play even more aggressively, and in the second set I told myself that I had to do it. Not just run, but play very aggressively and fight for every ball.”

“When did I realize I was winning? Probably after the match point. When you are focused, giving it your all and playing against a top tennis player, you can’t think about leadership, about winning. You have to fight, concentrate on every point.”

“The support from the stands? The support was incredible, sometimes I was shaking too. It was really cool, and I am grateful to the French fans for supporting me so much. I think it helped me to come back into the match, to play stronger and better.”

In the round of 16, Svitolina, the bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Games, will face ninth seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. Marta Kostyuk will also play in the third round of the 2024 Olympics. Her opponent is Maria Sakkari of Greece.
