Marta remains the only Ukrainian in the singles draw at the Paris Olympics
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk commented on her participation in the 2024 Olympics and reaching the quarterfinals of the singles after defeating Maria Sakkari from Greece in the 1/8 finals.
“I play well for my country. There are those who find it more difficult to play for their country, they are more nervous. I have not seen this. I approached the Olympics simply as a tournament, and I am happy with how everything is going. I am starting to get into shape, which was close to the beginning of the year. I am using the tournament not only to represent the country, but also to get into shape. So far, so good.”
“It was much more difficult for me [в понедельник]I don’t know why, because [во вторник] it was much worse. Maybe because I didn’t expect it to be so hot – I don’t know. I was prepared for this heat, I drank more [в понедельник] two liters of water to avoid dehydration.”
“I’m glad I managed and somehow won this match. I don’t know yet how, I’ve never had anything like this in my life [в 1/8 финала] with the serve. I don’t even know how many double faults I had — I won’t even look. Perhaps the nerves factor played a role, because I started the match confidently, and then I don’t know what happened to me.”
“When I went out to play, I knew I would be playing against Vekic. Honestly, I don’t know who I would have been more happy with – Coco [Гофф] or Donny. But I think, in the long run and if we take into account the level of players, then it’s better for me that Donna got in. Despite the fact that I’m at Roland Garros [сыграла против нее] “very bad match, was in very bad shape in my head, but the match was still very close. Let’s see how it goes, maybe the “Olympic magic” will work.”
Marta is the only Ukrainian left in the singles draw at the Paris Olympics. Elina Svitolina dropped out at the same stage of the 1/8 finals. Dayana Yastremska lost in the early rounds of the tournament, and Angelina Kalinina was forced to withdraw from the competition due to illness.
In the quarterfinals, Kostyuk will play Donna Vekic from Croatia. The tournament’s 13th seed knocked out world number two Coco Gauff from the United States in the 1/8 finals.
