Rebrov: I am very grateful to all the players that Shakhtar let go to the Olympics, but why didn’t Bondarenko go? I also have questions for Rukh

According to the expert, the Olympic team could have performed much better if it had assembled a stronger lineup

Head coach of the national Ukrainian national team Sergey Rebrov criticized the decision of some Ukrainian clubs not to release certain players Olympic team to a historic football tournament for her Olympic Games 2024.

“The only question I have is why Bondarenko didn’t go? Is he injured? I am very grateful to all the players Shakhtar let go, but why didn’t he go? I also have questions for Rukh. But this question concerns the relationship between the Olympic team and the clubs. We must respect the clubs, we cannot force them. They asked to abolish the Super Cup, to move the UPL. But the players from the Ukrainian championship did not come. Unfortunately, we did not get all of them. If this is not in the regulations, then the clubs should decide whether to let the players go or not.”

“We talked about how important this competition is for Ukraine. Our Olympic team could have performed much better if there were other players. I’m not talking about foreign clubs, because there’s no need to even talk about it. For example, Real Madrid only let players go for one summer tournament. That’s the clubs’ prerogative. They let Taloverov go, I talked to Mudryk, Zabarnyi, everyone, they were ready to go.”

“I understand why Sudakov didn’t go, why the players who played at the Euro didn’t go. What if? Dynamo is playing in the Champions League qualification. What if something happens to the first goalkeeper? Even Dynamo let players go. Now we already have two teams in the group stages of the European Cups, plus Kryvbas. We are all happy now that the Kievites beat Partizan. But what if something happened to the goalkeeper? I understand Dynamo’s position. As for Rukh, three players went, but many more were called up.”

Let us recall that in the summer of 2023, the Ukrainian youth team, led by Ruslan Rotan, made it to the semi-finals of the European Championship and qualified – for the first time in history – for the 2024 Olympics.

On the eve of the Paris Olympics, the coach of the Ukrainian Olympic team said that he does not see much desire on the part of most clubs to help his team and release their players to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games.

The blue-yellows were left without many strong players at the 2024 Olympics: Yegor Yarmolyuk, Mykhailo Mudryk, Ilya Zabarnyi, Ivan Zhelizko, Anatoliy Trubin. At the same time, Shakhtar was represented in the final application by the most – five players, of which only Dmytro Kryskiv and Daniil Sikan can be called close to the main team. Rukh was represented at the Olympics by three footballers – Oleksiy Sych, Oleg Fedor and Igor Krasnopir.

As a result, the Ukrainian team failed to pass the group stage, finishing in third place in Group B. Rotan’s team sensationally lost to Iraq (1:2), after which, while playing with a man down, they beat Morocco (2:1) and suffered a defeat from Argentina (0:2).
