Lucescu officially takes charge of the Romanian national team

Mircea, after a break, returned to coaching

Head coach of the national team Romania became Mircea Lucescu. The 79-year-old coach was officially introduced today at a special press conference.

Lucescu has signed a two-year contract. His goal is to successfully perform in the League of Nations, as well as reach the final part of the 2026 World Cup.

Mircea replaced Edward Jordanescu in the position. Jordanescu’s contract with the Romanian federation expired at the end of July, and the coach himself decided to leave this post in order to spend more time with his family.

At Euro 2024, Romania advanced to the playoffs of the tournament, taking first place in Group E. In the first round of the group stage, the Romanians defeated the Ukrainian team with a score of 3:0. In the 1/8 finals of Euro 2024, the team lost to the Netherlands (0:3).

Mircea Lucescu, 79, worked with the Romanian national team at the very beginning of his coaching career, from 1981 to 1986. Later, the specialist worked more often with clubs, and headed the Turkish national team.

In early May of this year, information emerged that Dynamo Kyiv had offered its ex-coach the position of general director of the club. At the same time, Lucescu himself stated that he would decide on his future at the end of May. Earlier, the specialist had rejected an offer from Besiktas.

Let us recall that Lucescu headed Shakhtar from 2004 to 2016. With the Miners, the Romanian won 22 trophies, including becoming the champion of Ukraine 8 times.

From the summer of 2020 to November 2023, Mircea worked as the head of Dynamo and in the first season under the leadership of the Romanian, the Kiev team became the champion of Ukraine, and also won the Cup and Super Cup of Ukraine.

Romania’s opponents in the Nations League (Division C, Group 2) are Lithuania, Cyprus and Kosovo.
