Defender Mienti Abena said he chose number 14 to play for Moscow “Spartacus” in honor of my brother’s birthday.
On Friday, the “red and whites” announced the transfer of the 29-year-old footballer; Abena’s contract is valid for two years. Previously, Georgiy Dzhikia wore number 14 for Spartak.
— I asked for two numbers: 12, because I was born on December 12, and 14 is my brother’s date of birth. When I made my decision, I learned from you that the former Spartak captain played under the 14th. It’s such a coincidence. But I’m glad to be the next after him with this number. It’s an honor for me,” Aben was quoted as saying by the Spartak press service.
Abena has been playing for Ferencváros since January 2023. In total, he has made 39 appearances for the Hungarian club in all tournaments, scoring three goals and providing one assist. In 2021, he made his debut for the Suriname national team, where he scored one goal in 17 appearances.
The Surinamese graduated from the Dutch Utrecht. He also played for De Graafschap, Spartak Trnava and Slovan Bratislava, with whom he became three times Slovakian champion.
Dejan Stankovic’s team is in fifth place in the MIR standings of the Russian Premier League (RPL) with 7 points. In the fifth round, Spartak will face Fakel Voronezh on August 18.
