Ricardo Gareca will be the tenth: how did La Roja behave during the change of coach in the middle of the Qualifiers?

Interrupted processes are not something new in the Chilean team. The first time a coach had to take over in the middle of a World Cup qualifying campaign was in 1965, during the 1966 FA Cup. Since then, it has happened several times.

La Roja plays key points in the FIFA date. Ricardo Gareca will play his first matches in charge of the national team in the ongoing qualifiers. El Tigre has already made his debut by playing in friendlies and the Copa América. However, it is only against Argentina that he will make his debut, followed by matches against the United States, Mexico and Canada.

On this path, after the surprising resignation of Eduardo Berizzo after the draw against Paraguay, he was Nicolas Cordoba the one in charge of leading against Ecuador. Of course, this is a temporary election, since it is an interim mandate and the ANFP has already declared that, whatever happens this Tuesday, there is no intention for it to continue.

Now, the former Peru coach will be the tenth in the history of the national team to take over with the World Cup qualification process underway. This has already happened in the qualifiers for the 1966, 1998, 2002 (2), 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups. The results have been mixed. On three occasions it was possible to access the global competition, on three other occasions this was not the case. On the way to Korea and Japan, there were two changes. On this occasion, the Everyone team was in last place.

With Zorro in England

The story of Luis Alamos and the Chilean team has several chapters. First in 1962, as assistant to Fernando Riera in the World Cup. Then as regular coach, the same year, in the Carlos Dittborn Cup and the Juan Pinto Durán Cup. Of course, he would begin to consolidate in 1965, when he took over in the final match of qualifying for England 1966. In these qualifiers, La Roja was part of the group with Ecuador and Colombia.

The coach was Francisco Hormazábal. However, the questions took their toll, since it was an accessible field, on paper. It ended in a tie with the Tricolores and they had to define themselves on neutral ground. Later, a series of defeats would mean the departure of the strategist. Among other things, because he did not want Alamos to be imposed as an advisor, a position he had already held in the past. In this way, Zorro remained as the starting coach.

Lima was the venue chosen to define Conmebol’s last place in the World Cup and there, La Roja won 2-1, thanks to goals from Leonel Sánchez (15′) and Rubén Marcos (40′). The national team has qualified for the global competition. On British territory, Chile would remain in the group stage. Zorro Álamos would take over the national team in 1973, qualifying for Germany 1974. He is the only coach to have led the local team at two World Cups.

Don Nelson’s Expeditions

Nelson Bonifacio Acosta had his first experience in charge of the national team in 1993, but he only managed one match. His career would definitively begin in 1996. The bald strategist took over the Everybody’s team after the departure of Xabier Azkargorta. The Spaniard left his post after equalizing against Venezuela early in the process at France 1998. In this way, the Uruguayan-Chilean led almost all this way.

With the Sa-Za duo as his banner, El Pelado managed to qualify La Roja for the event on French soil. He remained on the bench until November 2000, when he resigned. However, five years later he would coach Chile again in the qualifiers for Germany 2006.

The management led by Reinaldo Sánchez called him urgently to see if the team could make an effort in the final phase that would take it to the competition in the Teutonic nation. Unlike in the previous decade, this time he failed to do so. Of course, he was only in charge for five games.

The failures of 2002

After Chile qualified for France 1998 and reached the round of 16, it was thought that the Korea-Japan match would be a similar story. Marcelo Salas’ career was on the rise and other names were emerging that could complement La Roja. However, the qualifications went deep. In the first round, the national team was irregular, but remained between sixth and seventh place. The second half was a disaster.

The players resigned and Chile ended up playing with what they could rather than what they had. Pedro García, an experienced technician, but without success since the 80s, takes over urgently and the results are not given. “Management wanted Nelson Acosta to continue for a long time, but he resigned. Nobody wanted to take the hot iron, I did. I didn’t have the opportunity to choose, or to choose. I arrived as a firefighter, they wanted a foreigner, but there was not a single peso. In practice, the elimination was already finalized. They wanted this and that, but there was no money. They asked me for a favor and I, as a Chilean, weighed things up and accepted,” he stressed some time ago to The sportsman .

El Charro, as he is nicknamed, resigned after six months in office, after losing to Venezuela in Santiago. Jorge Garcés has taken charge in the last three games.

From Borghi to Pizzi

With the base of the Golden Generation reaching the best teams in the world, something was happening in Juan Pinto Durán in the process of Claudio Borghi, with results declining. Although Bichi led the 2014 Brazil Qualifiers at one point, a bad streak led to his departure. Within months, Jorge Sampaoli, who had achieved results at the University of Chile, took over.

Casildense managed to revive the national team and bring it to the best results in its history. The final stretch of these qualifiers was very good for Chile. In Brazil 2014 he had an exceptional participation and a year later he won the Copa América. But the escape of Sergio Jadue put the transandine in a complicated position. With the process for Russia 2018 underway (4 dates played, 7 points scored), Sampaoli was leaving. To replace him, Arturo Salah appointed Juan Antonio Pizzi as head of the group.

Macanudo has experienced both sides of the coin. He won the Copa América Centenario and reached the final of the Confederations Cup. It was assumed that the move to the World Cup was practically a procedure. But after a bad double date in September 2017, La Roja hung on by a thread and ultimately jeopardized their chances of reaching the best-of-the-best tournament. Goal difference was the key factor that favoured Ricardo Gareca’s Peru, who qualified for the playoffs and then gained access to the world competition.

The machete did not bear fruit

Reinaldo Rueda has never convinced the national team. Despite his consolidated records, the Colombian has not been able to recover the results. In the friendly matches there were always doubts and in the Copa América, despite the fourth place, the last two games have been very negative. The road to Qatar 2022 began with fits and starts (4 points in 4 dates and a historic defeat in Venezuela) and at that time, relations were strained with the management of Pablo Milad, who took over from the coffee grower already in the position of coach.

Despite this, his departure was a headache for the board of directors. Almost all negotiations failed and Martín Lasarte finally arrived, very improvised. The Uruguayan went, as they say, straight to the lions. He had no chance to prepare the team in the friendly matches. Qualifiers and Copa América. All in 12 months, because the calendar had been tightened due to the pandemic. Despite fighting until the final stretch, Machete failed to get the full team into the World Cup. After losing to Uruguay on the last day, Lasarte left and Eduardo Berizzo took over. El Toto, as we know, resigned a few days ago. This Tuesday, new debuts with the qualifications underway.
