Legendary Liverpool captain Yeats dies

The defender and scout who gave the Reds 30 years of his life passed away at the age of 86

He died at the age of 87. Ron Yates – legendary football player Liverpoolwho played for ten years under Bill Shankly.

Ron was known to be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease since January 2024. The Red Legend passed away on Friday, September 6th due to complications from the disease.

Yates is a Scot who spent his early career at Dundee United. The centre-back joined Liverpool in 1961 and stayed for a decade, being given the captain’s armband almost immediately and wearing it for many years.

Ron played over 450 matches for Shankly’s team in all tournaments, scoring 15 goals. He rose to the top division with the team, after which he became the champion of England twice, won the English Cup once, and the Super Cup three times.

After finishing his career at the clubs in the quagmire and briefly trying his hand at coaching, Yates returned to Liverpool as a club scout, a position he held for exactly 20 years, from 1986 to 2006. Among his discoveries was the legendary Finnish defender Sami Hyypiaa.

In mourning for Yeats, all flags will be flown at half-mast throughout the club grounds today.
