The 1990 World Cup’s top scorer, former Italy footballer Salvatore Schillacci, was rushed to a hospital in Palermo on Saturday evening, Sky News Italy reports.
Schillacci is in the pulmonology department. The 59-year-old footballer’s family reported on social media that his condition was stable.
“In view of the countless calls from many newspapers and the bad news that is spreading, we inform you that our beloved Toto is in a stable condition and is under constant observation by a team of doctors day and night,” the statement said.
Schillacci has been treated for cancer for several years.
The striker became the top scorer and was recognized as the best player of the 1990 World Cup, where the Italian team won bronze medals. At club level, he won the UEFA Cup once each with Juventus and Inter.
