His task is to prepare the team for the 2026 World Cup
The new coach of the national team USA became the former coach of PSG and Chelsea Mauricio Pochettino.
The coach agreed to work with the team during the preparation for the 2026 World Cup. It should be noted that this is Pochettino’s debut position at the national team level: before that, he coached Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham and PSG.
In May 2024, Pochettino left Chelsea. The team finished sixth in the Premier League. In addition, Pochettino’s team was in contention for both cup trophies, but first lost to Liverpool in the League Cup final (0:1), and then lost with the same score to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final.
The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) officially announced in July that Gregg Berhalter had stepped down as head coach of the men’s national team due to his poor performance at the 2024 Copa America at home. At the home Copa, the Stars and Stripes failed to advance to the playoffs, suffering two losses (to Panama and Uruguay) and finishing third in Group C.
The calendar for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been announced. The 23rd World Cup will be hosted by three countries – the USA, Canada and Mexico. The 2026 World Cup matches will be held in 16 cities: 3 in Mexico, 2 in Canada and 11 in the USA. The tournament itself will last 39 days – from June 11 to July 19.
