Nadal to miss 2024 Laver Cup

The legendary Spaniard was supposed to play for Team Europe along with Alcaraz, Zverev and Medvedev

Legendary Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal officially announced that he would not be able to take part in Laver Cup 2024scheduled for the 20th of September.

“I am very disappointed that I will not be able to participate in the Laver Cup in Berlin next week. It is a team competition and to really help Team Europe I have to do what is best for them and at the moment there are other players who can help the team win.”

“I have so many great emotional memories from playing at the Laver Cup and was looking forward to being with my teammates and Bjorn Borg in his last year as captain. I wish Team Europe the best of luck and will be cheering for them from afar,” Rafael wrote.

Let us recall that in April Nadal was declared for this tournament as part of the European team. He was to be joined by another Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev from Germany and “neutral tennis player” Daniil Medvedev. The World team was to be represented by Americans Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz, as well as Australian Alex de Minaur.

Nadal missed almost a year due to injury, returning to tennis only in January 2024. In eight months, Rafael played only 19 matches, winning 12. At the Australian Open, the Spaniard was eliminated in the second round, at Roland Garros 2024, he was immediately eliminated by Zverev, and missed two more majors – Wimbledon and the US Open – altogether.

In July, the 38-year-old tennis player reached his first ATP tournament final in two years (in Bastad, Sweden), but lost to Portuguese Nuno Borges.

Nadal’s last performance to date was the tennis tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where Rafa reached the second round, where Novak Djokovic crossed his path once again.
