The leading scorer of the 1990 World Cup and forward of the Italian national team in that tournament, Salvatore Schillaci, has died at the age of 59. It was reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

In 2022, the legendary forward was diagnosed with colon cancer. Schillaci was hospitalized in early September with a cardiac arrhythmia.

After his playing career, Schillaci returned to his hometown. There he directed the youth academy and periodically served as a guest expert for football programs.
