Bordeaux sign ex-Liverpool forward Carroll and defender Rukh Diava

A glorious club, demoted for debts, once again has a UPL player on its roster

French Bordeaux is rapidly recruiting a new team after being demoted. The Girondins’ latest newcomers are the famous English forward Andy Carroll and Senegalese defender Elhadji Pape Diavwho came from Lviv Ruha.

Carroll, 35, is known for his performances for Newcastle, Liverpool and West Ham – 248 matches and 54 goals in the Premier League. He once cost Liverpool more than 40 million euros. As part of the England national team, Andy scored two goals in nine games, participated in the 2012 European Championship, including against the Ukrainian national team (1:0). His last club was Amiens – 32 matches and four goals in Ligue 2.

Diav joined Bordeaux as a free agent – his contract with Rukh expired in the summer. The Senegalese transferred to the Lviv club in 2022, but never played in Ukraine. First, he spent six months in Polish Arka, and then went on loan to Stade Laval for two years. Elhadji played decently in the French Ligue 2 for Caen and Laval, and even once came out for 14 minutes in Ligue 1 for Angers.

Bordeaux is a six-time champion of France. Back in the 2021/22 season, the team represented the elite division, and for the last two years it played in Ligue 2, but recently the club collapsed due to insurmountable financial problems.

In August of this year, the Girondins were relegated to the fourth division due to debts. The club lost its professional status and terminated contracts with all players, including Ukrainian midfielder Dannil Ignatenko, who later found work in Slovak Slovan.
