Zenit captain Douglas Santos spoke about the reasons for the St. Petersburg club’s defeat in the 10th round match of the MIR Russian Premier League (RPL) against Krasnodar.
The meeting took place on Saturday in Krasnodar and ended with a score of 2:0 in favor of the home team.
— Douglas, a disappointing result for the St. Petersburgers. What can you say about the game?
“It was a match in which we tried very hard to show our best qualities, what we can and know how to do, but, unfortunately, it did not happen. And when we fail, we know that the other team will be better than us so we have to look at the mistakes we made, look at the ideas that didn’t work, so we can improve them in training so we can come back on the pitch with the intensity and quality. of football that the supporters expect from us.
— Is it worth talking about the justice or injustice of this defeat? Or are such conversations meaningless?
– No, I don’t think it’s about the fairness of the game as such. It was a game where each team had a 50/50 chance of winning, but like I said, if we had tried harder, added more quality, the result would have been different. When we don’t do it, we always lose points. We must therefore start the match better, we must maintain the intensity from the first minutes until the final whistle. I think we need to improve all of that to keep moving forward and create more chances in matches.
– What is more important now: forgetting this game as quickly as possible or drawing the right conclusions without forgetting anything?
“The good thing about football is that you always have the next game. When a game ends, you are already thinking about what awaits you. On Wednesday we play the Cup, but now, of course, we have to analyze what we did wrong, so that in the next matches we do not again make the same mistakes as in Krasnodar,” Douglas said in the club press service as said.
Zenit is in third place in the standings with 23 points; the bleus-blancs-bleus suffered their first defeat of the RPL season. In the next round, Sergei Semak’s team will host Orenburg on October 5.
