Gauff: I’m sure we’ll see more of Starodubtseva on Tour

The American, who is in the top 6 of the world rankings, noted the high level of her Ukrainian opponent

One of the strongest tennis players in the world, number six in the WTA rankings Coco Gauff commented on her strong-willed victory over the Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtseva in the quarter finals of the tournament WTA 1000 V Beijing.

“Obviously at the beginning of the match I didn’t serve that well. But that’s what happens when you work on something and try to figure out that element in the long term. In general, I’m happy with how I fought. My opponent has already had several victories here, taking into account last week as well [квалификацию]. She was not an easy opponent. I’m sure we’ll see more of her on Tour.”

“Yes, it’s always harder to play against a tennis player who has nothing to lose. Especially when she received a boost of confidence from many victories in a row. So it was important for me to focus on my actions and accept the fact that she would play good tennis just like me. That’s exactly what happened.”

Let us remind you that the match between the American and the Ukrainian lasted almost two hours. The first set was confidently won by Starodubtseva (6:2), but in the end Gauff managed to take the initiative and completely turn the game around.

For Yulia, the tournament in Beijing was a breakthrough. She made it into the main draw of the WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career, successfully qualifying. In the first round, Starodubtseva defeated German Laura Siegemund. Next, the Ukrainian passed Katerina Sinyakova, in the third round Elina Avanesyan was defeated, in the fourth – Anna Kalinskaya.

Thanks to her successful performances at the tournament in Beijing, Yulia has already secured her debut in the top 100 of the WTA rankings.
