Sergio was previously a left-back, but this season at his new club he has blossomed as a winger.
Spain national team before the October matches League of Nations suffered a serious loss – the main winger was forced to leave training camp Nico Williams.
The Athletic player felt physical discomfort and, after consulting representatives of the national team with the medical staff of his club, left the Furia Roja training camp in Las Rozas. Instead, he was promptly summoned to the team location Sergio Gomez from Real Sociedad.
22-year-old Nico (younger brother of Iñaki Williams, also an Athletic player who was selected by the Ghana national team at the international level) managed to play 22 matches for the first team of Spain, in which he scored four goals and provided six assists. At the triumphant Euro 2024 for Luis de la Fuente’s team, the left winger played six matches (all from the first minutes), in which he scored two goals (including against England in the final) and one assist.
In the current club season, Williams Jr. has two goals and two assists in nine matches.
24-year-old Sergio Gomez received his debut call to the first Spanish national team. He began his career in Barcelona (as a left back), and later played for Borussia Dortmund, Huesca and Anderlecht. Since 2022, he has represented Manchester City, where at one time he competed for the position with the Ukrainian Alexander Zinchenko.
This summer, Gomez moved from the English giants to Real Sociedad, where he rediscovered himself as a winger (mostly right) – 10 appearances on the field, three assists. Sergio is an all-rounder who can also play on the wing back or in central midfield. This summer, as a member of the Spanish Olympic team, Gomez became the winner of the 2024 Olympic Games, having played all 6 matches at the tournament (4 in full), in which he scored once and assisted his partners.
The Spanish national team had previously suffered one loss in the attack group: Girona winger Brian Gil received a call from Luis de la Fuente for the October training camp, but was unable to report to the team for the same reason of physical discomfort.
Spain at the start of the 2024/25 Nations League (Division A, Group 4) scored four points in two rounds. On October 12, de la Fuente’s team will host Denmark in Murcia, and on October 15 in Cordoba they will play against Serbia.
