Barcelona announced Szczesny for the Champions League instead of Ter Stegen

The Catalan giants signed the Polish goalkeeper, who had previously announced his retirement, last week

Barcelona officially declared the goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny for the season Champions League 2024/25. The Pole replaced a seriously injured player in the lineup Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Let us remember that on October 2, Barcelona urgently signed the 34-year-old Polish goalkeeper after Ter Stegen suffered a right knee tendon injury, underwent surgery and found himself out of football for seven to eight months. Szczesny signed a contract until June 30, 2025.

It was previously reported that Szczesny agreed to the role of Barcelona’s second goalkeeper. Wojciech intends to compete for a place in the starting lineup with Iñaki Pena, who will be the main goalkeeper of the Catalans.

Prior to this, in August, Szczesny announced his retirement from his playing career. The Polish goalkeeper said goodbye to Juventus before the match with Napoli.

The Polish newcomer was absent from Cules’ squad for Sunday’s away match against Alaves (3-0). Before that, he only managed to conduct three sessions with the team. According to head coach Hansi Flick, Szczesny should take advantage of the two-week international break to get in shape and be ready for the home game against Sevilla on October 20.

The Blue Garnets’ further schedule is extremely serious: on October 23, Barca will host Bayern in the Champions League, and three days later it will face El Clasico against Real Madrid.

Barcelona leads La Liga, after nine rounds ahead of Real by three points. In the Champions League, Flick’s team started with an away defeat to Monaco (1:2), after which they defeated Young Boys at home (5:0).
