Arteta: Shakhtar are doing incredible things by continuing to play at a high level in such a situation in Ukraine

The Pitmen will play Arsenal in the Champions League on October 22

Head coach Arsenal Mikel Arteta commented on the upcoming meeting with the players Shakhtar in the third round Champions League.

“Obviously, I have a lot of sympathy for the situation they are in. How can I imagine, especially talking with Alex Zinchenko, how this affects you, the entire country, your families and those around you? The incredible attitude that Shakhtar players show towards the situation; what they have to do to continue to play football at this level and compete the way they do is remarkable and we will welcome them here tomorrow in the best possible way.”

“No, football is definitely not the most important thing in this world, especially when compared with the situation in which Shakhtar finds itself. But they also decided to use football among many positive things that regenerate a truly powerful life. I think it’s wonderful how they managed and are managing the situation and the unity of their country. The ability of sport to also bring joy into people’s lives is something we should be very aware of.”

Arsenal got four points in two rounds of the 2024/25 Champions League. Shakhtar has one point and ranks 27th in the overall table.

The match of the third round of the Champions League between Arsenal and Shakhtar will take place in London tomorrow, October 22. Starts at 22:00 Kyiv time. The match will be officiated by a French team of judges led by Benoit Bastien.
