According to the coach of the young Kievites, the opponent played number two and scored with a single shot
Senior Trainer Dynamo U-19 Igor Kostyuk commented on his team’s draw against Maribor (1:1) in the second round Paths of the 2024/25 UEFA Youth League champions.
“You saw that the guys gave a lot of effort in this game. We dominated, but didn’t convert our chances. At the same time, we made a mistake in defense, holding the ball when releasing pressure, as a result of which we conceded a goal from the opponent’s only shot in both halves. At the same time, our team showed a fairly meaningful and high-quality game, which should have resulted in our victory.”
“As I told the guys, the ball didn’t go into the goal, but we needed to score. Especially in the first half, when we put pressure, played actively, and as a result we created many chances, but did not convert them.”
“They chose the tactic of playing “number two” and simplified the game as much as possible. The opponent used regular long passes in order to catch the ball in front. But our defenders played well and neutralized all these long passes. We must give Maribor their due – they are a well-organized team with quality players. They are unyielding in the fight, but we were better in this game, we just didn’t have enough chances.”
The match in the Polish city of Staleva Wola took place with the advantage of Kostyuk’s team, but during the meeting the white and blue had to win back. The only goal for the Ukrainian team was scored by Alexandra Peikrishvili.
The return match in Slovenia will take place on November 6. The start of the fight in Maribor is at 18:00 Kyiv time.
Let us remind you that Shakhtar U-19 also plays in the UEFA Youth League. The miners follow the League Path. In the first round, Shakhtar defeated Bologna on the road (4:3). Next, the Miners lost to Atalanta (0:3), but then Alexei Belik’s team defeated their peers from Arsenal (1:0).
On December 20, the draw for the main phase of the UEFA Youth League will take place, which will include the best clubs from the group stage, as well as from the Champions Path.
