Maccabi fans attacked in Amsterdam after Ajax match

Supporters of Tel Aviv’s Maccabi football club were attacked in the streets of Amsterdam after the Europa League match against Ajax, reports Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel.

The main stage fourth round encounter took place on Thursday. Ajax won at home with a score of 5:0.

Media outlets have published images from Amsterdam showing brutal attacks on Maccabi fans by masked assailants. Some of the attackers carried Palestinian flags and chanted “Free Palestine”. Several Israelis were injured; there is no exact number of victims yet; the attackers stole the passports of some Israelis.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Dutch authorities to “act decisively and quickly against the instigators of the unrest.” He also demanded that two planes be sent to Amsterdam to bring back Israeli fans. Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Danny Danon, called the incident an act of “radical terrorism.”
