Gerardo Martino’s team lost in the best-of-three series
The decisive match of the series took place 1/8 finals of the MLS playoffs — Inter Miami lost sensationally at home Atlanta (2:3), thereby losing the series with a score of 1:2.
Gerardo Martino’s team took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to a precise strike from Paraguayan Matias Rojas. Atlanta almost immediately not only won back, but also took the lead – Senegalese Jamal Thiare scored twice in the period from the 19th to the 21st minutes.
In the middle of the second half, Inter Miami equalized the score thanks to a goal from Lionel Messi, only the history of the first half repeated itself again and Atlanta quickly responded to the opponent’s goal with its own (Polish midfielder Bartosz Slysh scored).
Let us note that 40-year-old goalkeeper Brad Guzan (seven saves per match), known for his performances in the Premier League for Aston Villa, and also a participant in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups with the US national team, performed flawlessly in the Atlanta goal.
Ukrainian defender of Inter Miami Sergei Krivtsov was not included in the squad for the match due to a muscle injury.
As a result, Atlanta, which finished only ninth in the regular season and eliminated Montreal in the play-in, has now left the main MLS favorite behind. Inter Miami went through the entire regular championship in one breath and confidently won it in the Eastern Conference, but in the first round of the playoffs they lost the best-of-three series (previously, the opponents exchanged home victories with a score of 2:1).
In the quarter finals of the MLS playoffs, Atlanta faces a best-of-three series with Orlando. Her first match will take place on November 23.
